Luca Thompson, of Pavenham Park Golf Club, has claimed the Women’s County Champion of Champions title at Woodhall Spa to add to her impressive collection of trophies won in 2022.

The 36-hole event at the home of the National Golf Centre pitted the nation’s best female club golfers against each other with Thompson coming out on top thanks in large to a superb opening round of 69.

It was a stunning opening 18 holes from the Bedford golfer around what is a challenging Bracken Course, with only closest challenger Alice Barlow able to hold her own with an opening round of 72.

Four birdies for Thompson

The opening round of 69 for Luca featured four birdies and just the one dropped shot around the 5,500 yard course; an effort made all the more special as a lot of the field struggled.

Suffolk’s Alice Barlow was her nearest challenger after a level par morning round with Girls’ Champion, Isabella Kent in third with a four-over 76.

At the halfway stage, Thompson led from Barlow by three shots and never rescinded that lead, despite afternoon conditions becoming more demanding for the whole field.

Despite two birdies in the opening five holes for the Bedfordian, as well as on the 10th, a smattering of dropped shots kept the chasing field interested, with Barlow scoring consecutive birdies on 13 and 14 to make for a tight finish.

Thompson held on however, winning by two shots with a final +4 total of 148 with Barlow in second two shots back and Essex’s Katy Yates in third finishing on +8.

Luca had made the event after winning the Bedfordshire County Championship, beating Chanel Fontaine-Geary by three shots in May.

Now, the sky is the limit for the Pavenham golfer, who joins a growing list of successful golfers hailing from Bedford and surrounding areas and with winter approaching, she will be hoping for 2023 to come around fast.
