A remarkable back nine in the final of the 2022 Bedfordshire Ladies Championship helped Pavenham’s Luca Thompson to a coveted trophy in a mammoth competition at the South Beds Golf Club.

The County Championship began with a 36-hole qualifying event followed by three rounds of matchplay, with Thompson qualifying first; an +8 total after two rounds enough to secure top spot ahead of eventual runner-up, Chanel Fontaine-Geary.

Only the top 8 qualified for the matchplay, with golfers from across the county represented from the likes of John O’Gaunt Golf Club, Millbrook and Woburn Sands.

After Thompson beat Millbrook’s Bridie Quinn in the quarter-finals, she then saw off John O’Gaunt’s Ixie Akpam before facing off with Fontaine-Geary, who had home advantage.

Fontaine-Geary enjoyed the best of the front nine, the home golfer making the turn 1 up over Thompson, but after Luca levelled things up on the 11th, she pounced in emphatic style.

A stone-dead approach on 12 was followed up by back-to-back eagles on successive par 5’s, including a 30-foot eagle putt on 14 as Thompson stamped her authority on the final.

The contest was ended at the 15th as Thompson holed a par putt, winning 4&3 to add the Bedfordshire Ladies Championship to the Hampshire Rose Open title in an impressive start to the season for the 19-year old.

“When Chanel won the ninth it looked like things were going the other way so it was good to turn it around”, said Thompson who is now looking forward to a successful season in what is a competitive field in Women’s golf.

It brought an end to a strenuous competition, with lots of impressive golf played by all but the season looks well set up for Luca Thompson as she sets her sights on future glory.
