There’s a good time feeling around The Eyrie at the moment with the club celebrating their promotion to step three as well as looking forward to a new pitch and floodlights, and that has increased today with the announcement of a popular new signing.

Connor Tomlinson, 23, is back at Bedford Town almost a year to the day he left for the Midlands; a signing which will surely be welcomed amongst the Town fanbase with the striker looking to rekindle his goal scoring touch at The Eyrie.

Tomlinson left Bedford Town in June 2023 to play step three football at Nuneaton Borough, but that experience only lasted a matter of seven months as Borough withdrew from Southern League Premier Central citing financial difficulties in January.

After a brief loan spell, he then joined up with former manager, Gary Setchell at Corby Town permanently for the second half of the 2023/24 season, but the step four side missed out on the play-offs and Lee Bircham has now been able to tempt Tomlinson back to have a second crack at step three.

Bedford Town secured promotion with a 2-1 play-off final victory over Waltham Abbey at the end of May.

Alongside a new contract for star man Leon Lobjoit, the Eagles strike force is taking shape.

“Outstanding signing”

Tomlinson scored 21 goals in 53 games and was a huge part of Bedford Town’s last league title winning season in 2021/22 alongside Eagles legend, Rene Howe and he will now hope to forge a similar partnership with the likes of Leon Lobjoit and Liam Dulson this campaign.

Reaction from some of the Eagles faithful has already been positive, with many welcoming the great news and labelling it an “outstanding signing” on social media.

There were even comments from fans of Corby Town, with one saying, “Gutted he won’t be back at Steel Park” but also agreeing with Bedford Town fans that it was a “great signing”.

Not that the Eagles fanbase need reminding of it; Tomlinson was a huge hit at The Eyrie and will be welcomed home with open arms.

Speaking exclusively to Bedford Independent, Tomlinson outlined why he was returning to The Eyrie.

“I can’t wait to return to Bedford Town, it was an easy option for me. Birchy lines up his teams well, its a team that’s quite strong and of course a return to step three is a big draw.

“The 3G pitch is also an exciting development; Bedford Town is a big club and I’ve got a fantastic relationship with the fans and I can’t wait to get back out there again.

“The aim for this year is to secure step three and to have a good, solid season and hopefully we’ll be able to achieve that under Birchy’s guidance and with the help of the great fans we have here.”

Bedford Town’s pre-season schedule was confirmed on Thursday (13 June) with eight games against a range of opposition before the opening league game of the campaign on Saturday 10th August.
