The Bedford Independent has undergone an upgrade designed to make it easier for readers across Bedford Borough to access and read trusted local news.

The update includes faster-loading pages, cleaner fonts, improved accessibility features and foundations that will create new ways for readers to stay connected with trusted local reporting without relying on social media.

While the changes may appear subtle at first glance, the publication says they are part of a wider effort to future-proof independent local journalism in Bedford Borough while continuing to keep news free for everyone.

The changes are also designed to help readers spend less time fighting through clutter and more time quickly finding accurate, high-quality reporting about Bedford Borough.

Editor Paul Hutchinson said the refresh was focused first and foremost on improving readers’ experience.

“Bedfordians are lucky to have two responsible, regulated newspapers reporting on what’s happening on their doorstep,” Paul said.

“But we know readers are increasingly frustrated with clickbait, churnalism and sensationalism on websites overloaded with non-local stories and excessive advertising.

“We’ve fought hard against that from the start, and we want to strengthen our mission to make local news feel straightforward, trustworthy and useful again.”

Paul added that, despite the newsroom’s size, just one journalist is attached to their newsroom each day, the Bedford Independent continues to punch above its weight in local coverage.

“Even though we may well be the smallest newsroom in Bedford Borough, we continue to deliver unrivalled coverage of the issues, people and events that matter to our readers, while championing the people who make Bedford brilliant and holding to account those who do not.”

Faster and easier to use

Progress Publishing, the indie business which owns the Bedford Independent, said the site refresh has been designed to improve readability and accessibility across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.

Readers may notice brighter menus, clearer navigation and cleaner fonts, with some text now slightly larger to make reading easier across all screen sizes.

The publication says the work also improves loading speeds and helps prepare the site for future improvements.

Audio versions of every story

One of the biggest additions is a new audio feature from Instaread that lets readers listen to every article instead of reading it.

The feature has been introduced both for accessibility reasons and to give readers greater flexibility in how they consume local news.

Whether listening while travelling, working, exercising or because reading on screen is difficult, every story can now be heard at the touch of a button.

Clearer bylines and journalist profiles

Bylines are now more visible, with expanded profile pages explaining who writers are, their experience, and why they are qualified to cover particular subjects.

Apart from the increasingly popular satirical Bedford Ian column, which is written by several people, Bedford Independent readers have a clear understanding of who is behind its articles.

“There’s no hiding behind made-up names, vague bios or blank profile pages,” Paul said. “You’ll know exactly who is writing the public-interest journalism we deliver.

“That also means readers can better understand whether someone is writing as a journalist, columnist, campaigner, charity representative or community voice.

“Transparency matters. PRs and political assistants should not have free rein to promote their businesses, political agendas, or anything else unchecked under a vague ‘contributor’ byline.

“So that everything we publish sits within our wider editorial standards, regulations and responsibilities as a newspaper, we must make sure there is full transparency about who’s behind it.

“We believe local journalism works best when readers know who is writing the stories and understand their expertise. They must be able to trust there are real, relatable people behind that reporting.”

Reducing reliance on social media

It is now even easier to subscribe to the Bedford Independent’s free daily email newsletter, with buttons in multiple areas across the site giving readers the chance to sign up when they are ready.

Delivered at 06:00 each morning, the email includes the day’s lead story before it appears anywhere else, alongside the previous 24 hours of Bedford Borough news.

The publication says it wants to make it easier for readers to access trusted local journalism directly, rather than relying on social media algorithms.

“Too often now, important local stories are hidden because tech platforms and algorithms decide what people do or do not see,” Paul said.

“Our daily email gives readers a direct connection to Bedford Borough news without needing to scroll endlessly through social media feeds, hoping an algorithm decides local news is important enough to show them.

“It also helps reduce reliance on platforms owned by tech billionaires who increasingly profit from journalism and content created by others, while controlling how and whether that information reaches local communities at all.”

More community voices

The updated website also supports the expansion of regular community voices featured in the Bedford Independent’s column pages.

Alongside political opinion columns reflecting the full make-up of Bedford Borough Council, the publication says it is creating more opportunities for charities, environmental groups and community organisations to share their work and highlight what is happening locally.

The move builds on the Bedford Independent’s long-standing approach of combining accountability journalism with stories that celebrate the people and organisations making a positive difference across the borough, told in their own voices.

Supporting local journalism

Like most independent news publishers, advertising helps fund the journalism provided free of charge to readers across Bedford Borough.

The Bedford Independent currently carries two types of advertising on its website.

Some adverts are uploaded directly by the publication to support local Bedford Borough businesses, charities and organisations.

Others are delivered through third-party advertising networks and may feature brands and services from national and international businesses.

Advertising income remains essential to funding court reporting, council coverage, investigations, breaking news and community journalism.

But commercial director Julia Course continues to work hard with the editorial team to strike the right balance.

“We completely understand that some readers can find online advertising distracting at times,” acknowledged Julia.

“But the reality is that high-quality local journalism costs money to produce, and advertising has played an important role in allowing us to keep Bedford Borough news free for everyone to access.”

Julia adds that recent improvements to the website are also helping create opportunities to explore alternative ways to support its journalism, potentially reducing reliance on some forms of advertising over time.

However, Julia says she will continue partnering with Bedford Borough businesses and organisations of all shapes and sizes as part of the publisher’s wider commitment to the local economy and community.

“We’ve been supported by some local businesses from day one, and more and more are partnering with us as advertisers, sponsors of our events, or through our patron programme.

“We’ll continue working with them to help them grow their business in a way that is right for them and right for our readers”.

Readers who wish to directly support the Bedford Independent and Bedford Clanger, and reduce their reliance on national advertising, can contribute voluntarily through the publisher’s donation page.

Further improvements are planned over the coming months, including more personalised subscription options to the free daily email service that allow readers to follow topics such as breaking news, sport, politics, culture and community events.

The Bedford Independent will also be upgrading its search function, making it easier for readers to explore years of archived reporting, community stories and public-interest journalism.

The publication says the long-term aim is for the Bedford Independent to become not just a daily source of local news, but an increasingly valuable historical record and research resource for Bedford Borough.

“Local journalism creates a living record of a community,” Paul said.

“Whether someone is researching local history, revisiting major events, tracking public decisions or simply trying to better understand how Bedford Borough has changed over time, we want our reporting to remain accessible and useful long into the future.”

And readers will play a part in that too, with Progress Publishing promising that reader feedback will continue to help shape future changes across all its titles.

“We are proud of what the Bedford Independent has become, but we never want to stand still,” Paul said.

“We’ll keep listening, keep improving and keep working hard to provide Bedford Borough with the kind of local journalism it deserves.”
