Bedford Ian

Bedford Ian is the Bedford Independent’s satirical column, continuing a long newspaper tradition of using fictional or pseudonymous names to offer a humorous commentary of public life.

Satire has long played an important role in British journalism, from Private Eye’s blend of humour and public-interest scrutiny to the use of regular fictional voices, diary columns and pen names across the national and local press.

These columns allow newspapers to comment on events with wit, exaggeration and character, while still remaining grounded in facts.

Private Eye, founded in 1961, is one of the best-known examples of British satirical journalism, combining biting humour with investigative reporting and commentary.

While its humour may be subjective, Bedford Ian follows that tradition with a local focus. The column is contributed to by Bedford Independent staff and external contributors, giving it a collective voice rather than a single author.

Each section is checked against the Bedford Independent’s editorial and ethical standards for accuracy, fairness and appropriateness.

While Bedford Ian may contain opinion, interpretation and satire based on the facts presented, it remains subject to the same commitment to responsible journalism that underpins the Bedford Independent’s wider work.
