Bedford Ian has been looking at recent goings on across Bedford Borough and tells us what he thinks of it all.
Policing politics
No doubt policing in Bedford Borough needs to improve. Just ask anyone who’s waited too long for a response or walked through the town centre wondering if anyone in uniform is actually on duty.
So when the mayor started calling for better visibility and more action from Bedfordshire Police, many Bedfordians nodded in agreement. Fair point. We need more reassurance, more presence, and more accountability.

But the PCC has a point too. Policing isn’t just about boots on the ground; it’s about strategy, intelligence, prevention, and resources, as well as collaboration across agencies and organisations.
It’s a complex picture, and throwing more uniforms at it doesn’t always fix the core issues.
Unfortunately, this week’s events didn’t do much to bridge the gap. The PCC pulled out of a scrutiny meeting where he could have answered questions and further reiterated his Police and Crime Plan, an opportunity missed not just for him, but for the people paying his salary.
The mayor has since stated that the chief constable has agreed to increase the police presence across the borough this summer. But even he admits, “What matters now is not what is promised in meetings, but how it feels on the ground.”
Which raises the question: is this about policing… or politics?
The Mayor is a Conservative. The PCC is Labour. And whether they admit it or not, their ongoing clash is starting to feel more like point scoring than problem solving.
Bedford doesn’t need another press release or social media post. It needs action. Visible, measurable, lasting change*. And that won’t come from shouting across party lines, it’ll come from actually working together.
Because while politicians bicker, the rest of us are still walking home at night wondering when the promises will finally show up on our streets.
*Much applause needs to be aimed at the actual officers on the ground who did a great job in getting knives off our streets last week.
Car park clean up
A few weeks ago, we joked about a slightly unloved patch of land behind one of the buildings at Bedford Hospital, a spot we dubbed the ” Captain Sir Tom Moore Memorial Picnic Area and Chill Out Zone” after spotting a rogue picnic bench and a general air of neglect (Bedford Ian, 7 March 2025).
Well, credit where it’s due: it’s been cleaned up. Properly. The area has had a tidy, the odd debris has disappeared, and what remains is… actually quite lovely.
If your idea of a perfect lunch break involves a hospital car park and the distant hum of ambulances with a scotch egg in hand, then this, my friends, is your moment.
In all seriousness, it’s a small but welcome change. A quiet nod to the fact that little improvements still matter, even if it is just a patch of grass in a hospital car park.
Thameslink trolls
Poor Thameslink. They’ve actually done something rather lovely, a slick social media ad campaign celebrating Bedford as the end-of-the-line destination it truly is.
The video’s full of charm: riverside walks, bustling markets, the foodie scene, café culture, live music, leafy parks. Bedford resembles a mini city break with an independent soul. It’s enough to make even the most hard-bitten tourist officer shed a proud tear.
But of course… the internet.
The comments section? Less riverside romance, more derailed rage.
Complaints about delays, cancellations, ticket prices, and the general state of rail travel were raised, with some even taking a swipe at Bedford itself, as if the Borough were to blame for signal failures in St Albans.
Honestly, you try to do something nice.
Still, credit where it’s due. The video shows Bedford at its best. If nothing else, it’s a reminder of just how good this place can look when someone puts in the effort.
So Thameslink, proud Bedfordians see you. And while we can’t fix the signal failures, we do appreciate the shoutout, even if your mentions are now a public transport therapy group.
