Bedford rail users heading into London may have to rethink their plans next month as major ‘upgrade’ works will see some weekend services from East Midlands Railway (EMR) and Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) cancelled and replaced by buses.

There may also be disruption for those travelling to and from the north into Bedford.

1-2 June

  • Services from the north will terminate at Luton. Rail replacement bus services will operate between Luton Airport Parkway and Hitchin via Luton, and Harpenden and Potters Bar via Luton for onward connections into London King’s Cross.
  • Buses will also replace trains between Luton and West Hampstead.

8-9 June

  • Luton to Bedford: Buses will replace late night and early morning trains between 00.05 and 08.05 on Sunday 9 June.
  • Kettering to Wigston electrification: Services from Sheffield / Nottingham towards London St Pancras will divert via Corby and Melton Mowbray. Buses will replace trains between London, Market Harborough, and Kettering.

23 June

  • Rail replacement buses will replace Thameslink trains between London St Pancras International and Luton / Bedford, calling at all stations except Kentish Town.
  • All East Midlands Railways services from the north will terminate at Wellingborough with rail replacement bus services connecting between Wellingborough and Hitchin / Potters Bar for onward rail connections into London King’s Cross.

Buses will also run to and from Great Northern route stations as follows:

  • Hitchin – Luton – Bedford
  • Hitchin – Luton – Luton Airport Parkway
  • Potters Bar – St Albans City – Harpenden
  • Please note: The Thameslink route is also suspended between London St Pancras International and London Bridge. Tickets will be accepted on London Buses and the Tube.

Leicester to Peterborough: CrossCountry services will terminate at Leicester and Peterborough with buses replacing trains to Melton Mowbray, Oakham, and Stamford.

29-30 June

  • Luton to Bedford: Buses will replace late-night and early-morning trains between 00.05 and 08.05 on Sunday 30 June.
  • Leicester to Peterborough: CrossCountry services will terminate at Leicester and Peterborough with buses replacing trains to Melton Mowbray, Oakham, and Stamford.

The affected line, which runs between Sheffield and Nottingham in the north to London St Pancras in the south, is going through a multi-million-pound upgrade to electrify the length of the route.

Engineers will also be upgrading existing overhead line equipment and improving signalling.

This work will mean new bi-mode trains, which operate on electricity from overhead wires or a diesel engine, can be introduced for use by East Midlands Railway to provide what they say will be “faster, smoother, greener, and more reliable journeys”.

Travellers are advised to

  • Check their journey before setting off via nationalrail.co.uk or through East Midlands Railway’s and Thameslink’s websites and social media channels.
  • Allow extra time to complete their journeys as some train diversion routes and rail replacement services will be in place.
  • Follow the clear signage in place at stations to help complete your journey.
  • Speak to members of station staff if you have any questions about your journey or if you need any support.
