A fire has broken out in fields in Renhold and drivers are being advised to avoid the area as roads into the village have been closed.

Allison Prior shared her video of the blaze on the Riseley and Friends Facebook group, advising residents to stay away as Ravensden Road in Renhold was closed in both directions.

She told the Bedford Independent that the fire had broken out at around 2pm and that fire crews were on the scene.

It is not yet known what caused the fire and the Bedford Independent is awaiting a response from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue with an update on the situation.

Local residents are advised to keep their doors and windows closed to avoid smoke inhalation.

In a statement, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) said: “BFRS were called out today (19 July) at around 14:00 to a stubble fire, which covers an area over 40 hectares, at Ravensden Road, Renhold.

“There are eight fire engines and a water carrier at the scene.

“Wind conditions have had an adverse effect, however, the fire is now under control and we are scaling down the incident.

“Firefighters worked really hard to extinguish the fire in extreme heat conditions with assistance of partners. Two firefighters and a police officer have been taken to hospital suffering from the effects of heat.

“Crews will remain at the scene for approximately another hour.”
