The University of Bedfordshire and The Bedford College Group have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding, setting up a long-term partnership they hope will transform how education and skills are delivered across Bedfordshire.
The agreement builds on years of collaboration between the two institutions and aims to position the county as a national leader in high-quality post-school education, helping meet growing demand for a skilled local workforce.
Skills partnership
By pooling their strengths, the university and college group plan to create clearer routes for learners from further education into higher education and beyond, supporting progression, retraining and lifelong learning.
Professor Rebecca Bunting, Vice Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire, said the partnership was about creating a genuinely connected local education system.
“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to creating an education ecosystem that benefits learners, employers, and the wider community.
“By bringing together our collective strengths and expertise, we are shaping a more connected, forward-looking model of education – one that equips people with the skills and confidence they need to thrive.
“Together, we will champion innovation and excellence in skills development, expand opportunities for learners at every stage, and contribute to the long-term growth of Bedfordshire and beyond,” she said.
Boost for local skills and jobs
The Bedford College Group’s chief executive, Yiannis Koursis OBE, said the agreement marked a step change in how Bedfordshire can respond to local skills and labour market needs.
He said: “At its heart, this partnership is about people and opportunity. It represents a significant step change in how education and skills are delivered across Bedfordshire.
“Through deeper collaboration with the University of Bedfordshire, we are aligning provision with labour market need and responding directly to employers, creating clearer pathways for learners, and building the region’s talent pipeline required to support long-term economic growth.
“Together, we are committed to creating opportunities that transform lives, support businesses, and drive prosperity across our communities.”
What the partnership will deliver
According to the two institutions, key benefits of the new partnership include:
- High-quality education for learners: Providing clear learning pathways through a flexible and diverse mix of programmes, supporting smooth transitions into and beyond further and higher education.
- Workforce development and employer links: Developing an integrated approach to meet the ambitions of the Post-16 Education and Skills White Paper, working with local employers and partners to design courses and initiatives that reflect Bedfordshire’s real-world skills needs.
- Shared resources and expertise: Exploring how they can share facilities, infrastructure and specialist knowledge to improve efficiency and deliver greater impact for students, employers and the wider community.
The partnership will be overseen by a joint steering group that will meet regularly to monitor progress and ensure the work remains aligned with regional priorities.
The renewed partnership was launched at the start of the academic year with a joint “Skills Bedfordshire: Curriculum Planning and Partnership Working” symposium, featuring a keynote from the chief executive of Skills England and a panel of local anchor organisations.
