This year marks the 25th anniversary of Twinwood – the Clapham-based festival that is one of the most beloved vintage music events in the world.
From its origins as a Glenn Miller tribute concert, the four-day event, which takes place over the August bank holiday weekend, now attracts thousands of vintage music and dance enthusiasts to the Bedfordshire countryside.
Twinwood Festival is a unique homage to the music and culture of the 1930s to 1960s, and its Clapham location is steeped in history, holding a special significance for fans of the music of Glenn Miller.
Twinwood Airfield was a significant RAF base during World War II and is famed as the last place that the world-famous bandleader was seen before his disappearance in 1944.
This historical connection adds a poignant and nostalgic layer to the weekend, and festival-goers can visit the Glenn Miller Museum, situated on the airfield, which offers visitors a glimpse into the wartime era that shaped his music.
Vintage paradise
Alongside its historical significance, Twinwood is a paradise for lovers of vintage music and style, with festival-goers encouraged to dress in period attire.
From Friday, 28 to Monday, 31 August, the festival site will be awash with zoot suits and victory rolls, polka-dot tea dresses and fedoras. You’ll be transported back to a bygone era, with period details wherever you look.
There’s even a catwalk fashion show to celebrate vintage style, compered by legendary DJ and TV presenter Mike Read.
But if you haven’t got a retro outfit to wear, the festival has a huge vintage market stocked with everything you need to look the part, from clothing to accessories, records to memorabilia.
Dance to the music
For music lovers, there are a feast of performances to enjoy, with over 100 acts across multiple stages.
Headliners for the main stage this year include The Bootleg Beatles, Showaddywaddy, Mike Sanchez & his band, Si Cranstoun, The 1971 Show and more.
From big bands, swing orchestras, and rockabilly groups, to everything from Americana, jazz, soul, and blues, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Understandably, dance is a central element of the festival, with dedicated dance floors and workshops for swing, jive and lindy-hop.
Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a complete beginner, the festival offers a chance to learn and perfect your moves with the help of professional instructors.
Of course, you are just as welcome to watch the dancing from the comfort of your deck chair or picnic blanket if you prefer.
