Bedford Borough Council has approved a £2.5 million refurbishment of the Corn Exchange, with work scheduled to begin in early 2026.
The plans, part of a wider town centre regeneration strategy, will see the venue undergo a full redecoration, improvements to the Harpur Suite and Howard Room, upgraded toilets, new flooring, and a state-of-the-art sound and acoustic system.
The council says the investment is intended to future-proof the Corn Exchange as a cultural and community hub, supporting events, performances and functions aimed at boosting footfall in the town centre.
Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Customer Experience, cllr Sarah Gallagher (Conservative, Eastcotts), said the upgrade was more than just essential maintenance.
“This isn’t just maintenance, it’s smart, forward-thinking investment. One that supports local businesses, attracts new visitors, and celebrates the rich cultural fabric of Bedford,” she said.
The Corn Exchange work is part of a series of projects aimed at reviving Bedford’s town centre, alongside new business investment. Earlier this month, shoe retailer Deichmann opened a new store on Midland Road following a £750,000 refurbishment of the former Next building.
The council is also highlighting the broader economic potential of the Universal Studios UK theme park development, announced earlier this month, which is expected to boost visitor numbers across the wider area.
Work on the Corn Exchange is expected to be completed by March 2027.
