Tolchard’s is now open for business in Bedford

The latest business to open its doors in the Old Arcade might seem familiar to some, as it’s owned by the former managers of one of the town’s oldest retailers.

Until it closed this summer, Chris and Kate Temple were the managers of Goldings the ironmongers on Bedford High Street.

And they’ve brought their product knowledge and retail experience to one of the Arcade’s new small ‘kiosk’ units to open Tolchard’s.

The new shop opened on Saturday (2 November) and will offer many of Goldings’ best-sellers, although substantially less than the 35,000 lines of the former shop.

“We are providing key cutting, light bulbs, batteries, J-Cloths, Kilrock, Kilblock, Tableau and Antiquax products,” said Kate.

Proudly on display are photographs of Goldings over the years as well as the numbers 107, which were from the original shopfront on Bedford High Street.

Tolchard’s trading hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 9.30am – 5pm.

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
