Two men from Bedford’s Man Cave UK group are taking on a fundraising challenge that will literally and symbolically see them weighed down.
’14 for the 14 – The Weight Men Carry’ is a fundraising walk inspired by the statistic that 14 men die by suicide every day in the UK.
Bedford community leaders, John Walsh and Robert Matthews, will carry 14kg weighted vests for 21km on Saturday, 8 August, to raise awareness of men’s mental health.
The 14kg vest symbolises the emotional weight many men carry every day. At the same time, each stop along the route has been chosen to represent a different aspect of mental health, wellbeing, recovery and connection.
The fundraising will support the charity’s ongoing work across the local community, free peer-support groups and community initiatives.
John Walsh said: “This challenge is about far more than fundraising. It’s about creating conversations, raising awareness and reminding men that they don’t have to carry life’s challenges alone.”
“Every stop on the route tells part of the story,: agreed Robert.
“From resilience and recovery to belonging and brotherhood, we want people to see that support comes in many forms and that nobody should feel they have to struggle alone.”
The challenge will conclude with a symbolic final mile back to Wixams under the message: No Man Walks Alone.
