Bedford International Athletics Stadium is gearing up to host the latest edition of the Bedfordshire Games; the unique, inclusive event that allows people with learning disabilities to compete across a number of different sports.
The 37th edition is due to be hosted on Tuesday, 7 July.
Dating back to 1989, the Bedfordshire Games aim to give adults with learning disabilities across Bedfordshire an opportunity to participate in a day of athletics.
The Games rely entirely on charitable donations, but continues to be a valued event amongst the disabled community, and attracts a vast number of volunteers to help the event run smoothly.
There are official starting flags and finishing lines, measured jumps and throws, medal ceremonies and personal triumphs, all taking place in a supportive and inclusive atmosphere.
Organisers call it, “a day of happiness and celebration”, as local athletes once again get the chance to compete against their peers in a safe environment.
A day of smiles
The Bedfordshire Games is less about securing a spot on the top step of the podium, and more about celebrating the inclusion that has led them there.
“It’s inspiring to see many people come year after year to take part in the day”, says Carly Jordan of Bedfordshire Games committee.
“The sense of excitement as they participate and cheer on team mates and friends makes it a day of smiles, whatever the weather.”
While the athletics will be the main event, there are a number of other guests invited to add to the show.
Cheerleaders from Biddenham Upper School will kick off the event, and there will also be a special lunchtime performance from ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ act, ‘Born to Perform’.
With a number of local dignitaries also invited, and all directed by the volunteer ‘Games Makers’, it’s sure to be a fantastic day of celebration.
The Bedfordshire Games are always looking for new volunteers and sponsors as it runs on a tight budget and with a small, committed core group.

The Bedfordshire Games take place on Tuesday, 7 July between 10.30am and 2.30pm at Bedford International Athletics Stadium on Barkers Lane, and entry for spectators is free.
