SMART Prebend Centre’s CRIB appeal launched for 2019

SMART CRIB homeless appeal

This week SMART CJS launches the annual SMART Prebend Centre CRIB appeal, once again calling on local residents and businesses to support Bedford’s homeless throughout the cold winter months.

With running costs of over £250,000 per year, the Prebend Day Centre is entirely reliant on donations and the support of the community.

The CRIB appeal raised over £50,000 in 2018 and this year they’re hoping to go one better and raise £60,000.

A donation of just £10 could provide breakfast for 30 people, or £100 will provide 2 weeks’ of food for the centre from our partners Fair Share.

Anita McCallum, CEO of SMART CJS, explains: “It is shocking that in 2019 the number of people who are homeless and dying on the streets is increasing. I wake up every day, fearing the call to say we have lost one of our own.

“The winter months on the streets are the toughest, with biting winds, dampness and frosty conditions making for an uncomfortable and, sadly, life-threatening existence.

“Our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to run the centre offering warmth, food, companionship and hope to people who find themselves at the lowest point in their lives. The SMART Prebend Day Centre provides a place of safety and support to help those who use the service find a path out of their situation.

“Please make a donation so that we can keep the service open and continue to provide support, compassion and hope to Bedford’s homeless this winter.”

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
