The RSPCA and Bedfordshire Police’s rural crime unit have removed 112 live and three deceased rabbits from a property in Shortstown.

The action took place on New Year’s Eve in response to a report by a member of the public.

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: “We are aware of this situation and are investigating.”

They said the rabbits are currently in RSPCA care and “their welfare is our top priority”, but were unable to provide specific information about the case, saying it could prejudice a future investigation or lead to the charity receiving a fine.

“We are so grateful to people who report suspected animal suffering to us and we would like to reassure people we will always look into and, if necessary, investigate any complaints made to us about animal welfare,” said the spokesperson.

“A lot of the time issues will be dealt with by advice and education and it is not always appropriate to publicise this information for legal reasons.”
