Rock Choir ‘flash mob’ perform musical treat for unsuspecting Harpur Centre shoppers

Bedford Rock Choir assembled in the Harpur Centre on Saturday (13 May) to give unsuspecting passers-by and shoppers an impromptu musical treat.

Choir members came from all directions, bursting into a surprise ‘flash mob’ rendition of Boogie Wonderland. They then performed a one-hour set for the gathered audience.

Bedford Rock Choir has been chosen to open this summer’s West End Proms, which is being held in Bedford Park on Sunday 25 June and their performance promises a spectacular opening set of uplifting, feel-good, pop, rock and chart songs.

Rock Choir is a nationwide initiative and was the first contemporary choir of its kind to offer an accessible and inclusive experience for amateur singers.

With over 33,000 members in over 400 local communities, Rock Choir is an alternative to the traditional classical or community choir, with its ethos of fun, friendship and community spirit being a huge part of the attraction.

Members of Bedford Rock Choir told the Bedford Independent that being part of Saturday’s flash mob was a “wonderful” and “uplifting” experience.

“I joined Rock Choir in January and have found it to be a warm and inclusive group with a common goal to have fun whilst singing,” said one of the singers.

“Rob [Baker, Rock Leader] is an energetic leader who encourages us to learn and perform with confidence.  It is truly joyous!”

Another member of the choir told us how many of their long-held ambitions had been fulfilled by being part of Rock Choir.

“Rock Choir has given me the chance to fulfil some long-standing ambitions including singing solo to a paying audience, singing at Disneyland Paris and recording at Abbey Road,” they said.

“Being selected to sing at the Bedford West End Proms is a terrific finale to my year with Rock Choir.”

Bedford Rock Choir is led by Rock Leader Rob Baker and they rehearse on a Wednesday night and Thursday morning at Kings House in Bedford.

Rock Choir would love to welcome new members and the first session is free. To find out more or to sign up, visit rockchoir.com.
