In this afternoon’s announcement, the Prime Minister has scaled up the coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown, demanding that hospitality venues close until further notice.
“We are collectively telling cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants to close tonight as soon as they reasonably can and not to open tomorrow,” said Boris Johnson.
“To be clear, they can contine to provide take out services. We’re also telling theatres, cinemas and gyms to close on the same timescale.
“These are places that people come together, but the sad case is that at least for now we need to keep people apart.
“Some people may be tempted to go out tonight, you may think you are invincible, but I say please don’t as you could be a carrier for the disease and infect others.”
Many of Bedford’s most popular eateries, pubs and cafes have been adapting their service to cope with the strain on the business.
Many are offering takeaway and delivery services, and the village pub in Felmersham, The Sun, has diversified to become a pop up village shop.
The Chancellor has announced a support package for businesses during the closure period. More detail on that to follow.
