More than 200 young athletes took part in the second Bedford Junior Aquathlon of 2025 on Sunday, 12 October, marking a record-breaking year for the event.
Held at Robinson Pools & Fitness and Bedford Park, this year’s competition attracted 204 children — the highest number in the event’s 19-year history.
Inspiring
Organised by Bedford Borough Council’s Sports Development team, the Aquathlon invited competitors aged seven to 16 (school years 3 to 11) to test their swimming and running skills in a fun and inclusive setting.
Distances were tailored for each age group, starting with a 66-metre swim and 600-metre run for the youngest entrants, up to a 400-metre swim and 2.8-kilometre run for older participants.
Cllr Sarah Gallagher (Conservative, Shortstown), Portfolio Holder for Customer Experience, Leisure and Culture, said: “Reaching over 200 participants this weekend is a remarkable achievement for the Bedford Junior Aquathlon.
“It’s fantastic to see so many children from across Bedford Borough embracing fitness with such enthusiasm and spirit. Events like this play a crucial role in promoting health, confidence, and community connection among our young people.”
The first Bedford Junior Aquathlon this year was held on Sunday, 30 March with 173 children swimming and running their way through the event at Robinson Pools & Fitness and Bedford Park.

A day of energy
Amy Stevens, Sports Development Officer at Bedford Borough Council and event organiser, said the turnout reflected the growing popularity of the Aquathlon.
“The energy and commitment from all the young athletes this weekend was truly inspiring,” she said. “Breaking the participation record shows just how valued this event is becoming.
“Our team, along with volunteers and families, made this possible, and we can’t wait to welcome even more participants when we return in March 2026.”
Every child received a medal, with trophies awarded to the top three finishers in each age group for both boys and girls. Parents praised the atmosphere, organisation and the opportunity for children to grow in confidence.
One parent said: “Sunday was absolutely superb. My daughter took part for the first time in March, and as soon as she finished, she wanted to do it again.
“So we were back again yesterday. It was an incredibly organised and smooth event, so friendly but with a competitive edge if needed.”
Building community
Bedford Borough Council thanked all the children, parents, volunteers and supporters who helped make the event such a success.
The next Bedford Junior Aquathlon will take place in March 2026, with registrations opening early in the new year.
The event is funded by sponsorship from the Gale Family Charity Trust and entry fees from competitors, with additional support from GLL, who provide the venue and lifeguards free of charge as part of the council’s leisure contract.
