An Oakley businesswoman who recently published her first novel will be signing copies of Finding Carla at the Oakley Craft and Gift Fair in aid of Save the Children this Saturday.

Lesley Anne Brown published her debut novel after adding ‘writing a book’ to her list of 60 things to do to celebrate being 60.

The story follows the journey of Carla, a prematurely retired 50-something mum and grandmother who jets off to America for the trip of a lifetime along the legendary Route 66 in a red Corvette after her husband ups and leaves her out of the blue.

She took the ‘write what you know’ approach and based many of Carla’s adventures on the ones she had with her own husband, Dave, when they travelled together across the US. They are both car enthusiasts and undertook various trips in an eye-catching 1931 hot-rodded Ford Model ‘A’ Phaeton.

Lesley said: “We bought the car, which looks like the one Bonnie and Clyde drove when they were robbing banks, back in 2007 in Denver, Colorado. For the next seven years, we went on many memorable road trips, crossed 22 states, completed most of Route 66 and made lots of good friends along the way.”

Finding Carla is published by Wrate’s Publishing and will be available to buy between 10am and 3pm at the Gift and Craft Fair at Oakley Village Hall on Saturday 20 April.

There will also be a wide selection of handmade gifts, homewares, craft supplies and more on sale – created by local crafters, as well as refreshments.

Signed copies can also be purchased from The Eagle Bookshop in St Peters St, Bedford or from Amazon as an eBook.

Lesley told the Bedford Clanger: ‘I’m still pinching myself that I’m a published author, having dreamed about it for so long.

“I’ve had so many lovely comments and reviews about Finding Carla, which makes me glad I put it out there to the public. I’m looking forward to being at the craft fair in Oakley on Saturday and will love it if people come and say hello and chat to me about the book and my travels across the USA with my husband Dave.”
