The Arts Society is a national and international network of societies, based in London which brings together people with a shared curiosity about the arts.

Interests include artists and artistic movements from Britain and abroad, architecture, music, needlework, photography, exhibitions, galleries, craftwork, sculpture, and our classical heritage, to name just a few.

Membership of the North Bedfordshire Arts Society (NBAS) group offers free entry to fascinating lectures as well as special study days, visits, courses and events, an arts magazine, tailored tours, and volunteering opportunities. The organisation also supports young arts in the area to encourage creativity among the young.

Monthly meetings take place at the Addison Centre in Kempston and past lecture topics include Banksy, Raphael, Dickens at Christmas, Berthe Morisot, Zaha Hadid and the art collection at Windsor Castle.

These are featured in the Bedford Clanger What’s On Guide, or you can find out more at the NBAS website here.

Study days have covered Faberge which tied in with the exhibition at the V&A and an afternoon with John Benjamin, of Antiques Roadshow.

“We’ve spent a wonderful Spring day at Wightwick Manor and on another occasion, we visited some unknown parts of Cambridge that few of us had been to before,” said NBAS’s joint chair, Debbi Clifton. “We began with a fascinating tour of the eco-mosque before moving on to see the art collection at Murray Edwards College. We also had time to admire open-air sculptures in some of the Colleges.

Future events include a tour of The Globe Theatre, a visit to Upton House, lectures on Cezanne, Handel’s London, Mary Anning, a fossil collector, and more.

“Some members say that the topic of the day was either one they knew nothing about or weren’t interested in but they come out with eyes sparkling, inspired by the lecturer’s professional understanding and knowledge, as well as his/her ability to communicate,” said Debbi.

Annual membership is £50 and guests are very welcome for £10 per event. Meetings take place at The Addison Centre in Kempston on the last Tuesday of the month at 11am-noon, preceded by coffee from 10.15am.

You can find membership details and the seasonal programme on their website: northbedsartssociety.org.uk or email northbedsdfas@gmail.com or nbasprogramme@gmail.com for more information.
