A new service has been launched at Bedford Hospital’s maternity unit to support families who might be arriving earlier than expected, may need to stay longer or are experiencing financial hardship.

‘Little Nest’ launched in August and stocks a range of essential everyday items that patients and families might need during an unexpected or stressful stay.

Items available include toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash, and hair brushes, plus practical items for newborns.

The project has been backed by Bedford Hospitals NHS Charity and was implemented by midwife Fraya Wallington with support from other staff members.

Things don’t always go according to plan…

Explaining why she set up ‘Little Nest’, Fraya said: “The arrival of a baby doesn’t always go according to plan.

“Unexpected admissions or longer hospital stays can leave families without essential items at a time when their focus should be on their new baby.

“‘Little Nest’ has been created to provide practical support and comfort, ensuring no one has to worry about the basics during their stay.”

Charmaine Norrish, fundraising manager said: “A huge thank you to everyone who has supported the development of ‘Little Nest’ and helped make this possible, from Fraya, to fellow staff and local businesses.

“It has been fantastic to see this come to fruition.”

Ilene Machiva, director of midwifery and deputy chief nurse, commended Fraya for her commitment and compassion in getting the project off the ground.

“I am sure ‘Little Nest’ will help create a more comfortable experience for many service users during their time in hospital going forward,” she said.

It is hoped that the ‘Little Nest’ service can be expanded to the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital in the future, enabling more families to benefit from this initiative.
