New benches and resurfaced walkway complete first stage of £1.5m Embankment investment

The 15 new benches overlook the River Great Ouse on Bedford's Embankment

New benches and a resurfaced walkway have been unveiled as the first stage of improvements to Bedford’s Embankment has been completed.

The 15 benches are in position alongside the newly resurfaced walkway between Newnham Road and Bushmead Avenue.

Bedford Borough Council says the benches will refresh and enhance the look of the Embankment, and provide better places for people to sit and relax along the River Great Ouse. The new benches are metal with recycled plastic slats.

The 15 benches were funded by the Welcome Back Fund, developed by the government as part of the Covid-19 response. It comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and aims to support the UK’s high streets and tourist attractions in welcoming back shoppers and visitors.

Mayor Dave Hodgson said: “I am delighted that these works down the Embankment are complete, well ahead of the River Festival, improving and enhancing this already spectacular area of Bedford.

“During COVID-19, I know so many people really valued the beautiful open spaces we have in the Borough, and the benefits it can have for our physical and mental health.

“The Embankment is a wonderful place to walk, cycle or scoot, and take a seat on these new benches and enjoy the surroundings.”
