Nearly 800 people took part in a free day of yoga, mindfulness and wellbeing activities at Bedford Park on Sunday.

The annual Yoga and Wellbeing in the Park event returned for its ninth year, offering 20 activities across two zones and attracting people of all ages, abilities and interests.

Organised by Bedford Borough Council’s Sports Development Unit and sponsored by The Harpur Trust and Delomac Roofing, the event formed part of Great Big Green Week, a national celebration of community action for nature and climate.

Popular sessions

Held beside the Pavilion in Bedford Park, the event showcased local wellbeing practitioners and offered a range of activities designed to support physical and mental wellbeing.

Among the most popular sessions were the Sound Bath experience and the Shift Your Energy yoga session.

Organisers said accessibility remained a key focus, with three sessions adapted for people with disabilities and those with reduced mobility.

Visitors were also able to take part in laughter yoga, breathwork, Qigong, Reiki sessions and a cacao ceremony.

Wellness chair massages, along with dedicated women’s and family sessions, also proved popular throughout the day.

Inclusive event

Participants praised the welcoming atmosphere and range of activities on offer.

One attendee said: “This is my second year attending Yoga and Wellbeing in the Park, and I had the best time. I was so impressed at how many different activities and sessions were available.

“A British Sign Language interpreter was there too, which made the event really inclusive.

“I enjoyed the Breathwork session and having wellness chairs made it much easier for people like me who struggle with mobility. I am looking forward to next year’s event.”

Looking ahead

Cllr John Wheeler (Conservative, Kempston Rural and Wootton), portfolio holder for customer experience, including leisure, recreation and culture, said the event had once again brought people together to focus on their wellbeing.

“It was wonderful to see people from across the Borough and beyond come together to boost their physical and mental wellbeing,” he said.

“We are proud to provide accessible events where everyone can enjoy free outdoor activities in a popular community setting in Bedford.

“The Council is grateful to all participants, instructors, volunteers and staff who contributed to its success, and we look forward to next year’s event.”

Planning is already underway for the 2027 event.
