Nearly 100 streets sign up to Doorstep Carols in just one week

Sing safely and keep your distance this year...

In just one week, almost 100 streets and neighbourhoods have signed up to take part in the Borough-wide Doorstep Carols on Christmas Eve.

And there’s still time to join in the festive fun.

The synchronised carol singing will begin at 6pm with a rendition of Jingle Bells ringing out through the streets and villages of Bedford Borough.

Ben Woodfine, who came up with the idea of Doorstep Carols, said: “I already knew that there was a great community spirit in Bedford, but I’m overwhelmed by the response so far.

“We’ve even had an enquiry from a lady in Somerset to ask if she can replicate the idea where she lives.”

If your street, neighbourhood or village would like to join in the festive sing-song, you can register by emailing

You’ll be sent all the information you need to safely organise a local event, as well as the lyrics for three Christmas songs.

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
