Monthly Column: Have a happy and safe Christmas

Christmas is coming and by the time you read this, the festivities will be well underway across Bedford Borough with Christmas Lights throughout the Borough.

Father Christmas has been busy appearing at many of the villages as well as attending the Kempston Christmas Lights switch-on and is at the Harpur Centre Grotto in Bedford.

Bedford town centre has seen the Charter Market and an Eat Feast Christmas Special already.

This coming weekend, Bedford will host a Christmas Makers Market in collaboration with Made In Bedford with a wealth of artisan crafts, handmade decorations, fresh produce, and quality confectionery on offer on both Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th.

Every weekend there are a selection of bands and choirs performing in Bedford town centre and lots of other fun activities including face painting and balloon artistry.

There is a Festive Christmas Trail with Christmas characters to find in Bedford shop windows. You can pick up a copy of the Trail from Bedford Central Library or download it from the Love Bedford Christmas Hub.

These events are sure to bring some Christmas cheer to our town centre in the run-up to the big day. Whether you’re planning to enjoy a hog roast, trying some new food at Eat Feast, finding that perfect gift at the Made In Bedford market, or just taking a break and listening to some festive music there is something for everyone.

I would, however, like to remind residents however they celebrate Christmas to do so safely. We have seen the emergence of the Omicron variant in the UK and the Government have introduced a number of new measures.

These include making face coverings compulsory on public transport and in shops again and changes to testing and isolation rules for those entering the UK from overseas.

These new rules should not stop us enjoying Christmas and there are plenty of events across Bedford Borough that are either outside or can be enjoyed safely inside.

Please keep yourself, your loved ones and our community safe during the run-up to Christmas.

This is a monthly guest column provided by

does not reflect the views of the Bedford Independent.

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
