Bedford’s Modernian Swimming Club have enjoyed a successful County Championships with the Amateur Swimming Association, managing to pick up a huge 141 medals of all colours across the bumper meet.
The Bedfordshire Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) manage all aquatic events in the county and administer sports from swimming and diving to artistic events and water polo.
By far Modernians’ most decorated swimmer was the talented Eloise Cole who won six senior golds alongside six golds in her junior 15’s age group to achieve a clean sweep across the board.
Her events are across the smaller distance, but her talent is not in question as she took home twelve golds while breaking five county records in the process in different disciplines across 50 metres and 100 metres.
Voted as the Junior Personality of the Year at Bedford Borough’s recent Sports Awards, Cole enjoyed a monumental 2022 that included competing at the British Championships in Sheffield and will hope she can take that impressive form deeper into 2023.

Golds for Young and Close
Elsewhere, there were golds for Lucy Young in the 200m backstroke and freestyle at senior level while Ryan Close won three gold medals in the 15s age group, dominating the backstroke across 50, 100 and 200 metres.
Adam O’Neal was also a double winner across the longer 800 and 1500 metre distances with decent times to match.
Swimmers across events also pick up FINA points for their performances with Joseph Emms (Boys 12’s) and Abigail Davis (Girls 13’s) winning big points for earning the top swimmer awards at the County Championships.
Members of the club, that is based on De Parys Avenue in Bedford, are currently in Cyprus on a warm weather camp ahead of another hectic Summer schedule with regional finals approaching in May followed by the National Championships in July.
