A new GP surgery is set to be built in Wootton as part of a £17 million investment in local healthcare across Bedford Borough.
The announcement follows a meeting between Bedford’s mayor, Tom Wootton, local councillor John Wheeler, and NHS representatives, confirming that the new surgery will be constructed on council-owned land near the roundabout opposite Rumble’s Chip Shop.
The relocation avoids the need to redevelop the current site, which would have required a full closure of the existing surgery. A seamless transfer is now planned once the new site is complete.
The surgery is now on the NHS priority list, and the Borough Council has said it will work with both the NHS and Wootton Parish Council to deliver modern healthcare facilities that meet the needs of the local community.
Mayor Tom Wootton (Conservative) said: “This is a great example of how we can use Borough-owned land more effectively to support our communities.
“By making the most of the assets we already have, we’re able to deliver much-needed facilities without unnecessary delays or disruption.”
Cllr John Wheeler (Conservative), who represents Wootton and Kempston Rural, added: “This is a positive step forward for Wootton. Securing this new site means we can provide modern healthcare facilities while keeping the current surgery open throughout.
“It’s about putting local needs first and planning sensibly for the future.”
