Love Your Local Market (LYLM) celebrations take place in Bedford this weekend (Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May), with sunshine, family fun and Bedford Flea to draw in the crowds.
On Saturday, free face painters and balloon modellers will be at Harpur Square alongside Gumbles fairground rides. The popular Handmade in Bedford market – which takes place on the second Saturday of every month – will be on Midland Road.
On Sunday 12 May, the Bedford Flea will be back in St Paul’s Square from 11am – 4pm. Stallholders will be selling everything from furniture to clothes, collectables to vinyl and the Affordable Art Market will showcase some of Bedford’s best artists.
Bedford has held a charter market for over 800 years, and as town centre businesses have come and gone, the Wednesday and Saturday markets have remained at the heart of the community.
Kempston hosts a regular market at the Saxon Centre every Thursday and Sunday, with fresh produce including fruit and vegetables.
Established in 2012, Love Your Local Market is a national celebration of markets. Since its launch, LYLM has given over 11,000 people the chance to sample market trading and many new businesses have been created.
Bedford’s celebrations are ahead of the national LYLM week (17 – 31 May), so check out other nearby markets taking part on their website.
Mayor Dave Hodgson said: “We never need much of a reason to celebrate Bedford’s markets, and Love Your Local Market weekend is a great chance to come along and explore all they have to offer. With lots on for children and a variety of markets for the adults to wander through, this is sure to be a great weekend for the whole family.”
Other regular markets in Harpur Square include the Home and Garden Market every Friday, the Farmer’s Market on the second and fourth Thursday, and the Handmade in Bedford Market on the second Saturday of the month (from March to December).
To make the most of Bedford market, we highly recommend picking up a coffee from Libby at La Piazza, browse the stalls, chat to the traders and make your purchases.
Pop across the road to Made in Bedford at Number 13 to buy some locally made loveliness and pick up some vegan-friendly food. Next door, the Oxfam shop has an amazing range of second-hand books and vinyl to browse and buy too.
Bedford Flea takes place in St Paul’s Square on Sunday 12 May, 21 July and 8 September. If you would like to be a stallholder, please email firstname.lastname@example.org more information.
