New benches overlook the River Great Ouse on Bedford's Embankment

Dear editor,

Like many in town I enjoy walking along the embankment and appreciate it as a major leisure asset of our town, however, does it really deserve to be elevated above many other urgent maintenance programs?

I walk and cycle the streets of Bedford daily and see poorly maintained, shabby, littered streets most places I go.

The ‘butterfly’ bridge the engineer’s bridge, the ‘aspects’ footbridge and the promenade itself have all had, or are having, significant money spent recently.

How about sparing a few quid for litter pickers and/or enforcement wardens and some pavement maintenance in the outlying suburbs instead?
