Dear editor,

Thanks are due to Paul Hutchinson for his coverage of the growing practice of disguising election literature as some kind of public information service.

Read: Prospective MP candidate defends “deceitful” marketing claiming it’s ok because “people are familiar with my name”

The first leaflet we received from our prospective Conservative candidate surprised me with its preponderance of green, especially odd in view of the prime minister’s enthusiasm for offshore oil exploration and extraction.

Her second one, as Paul reports, was in party pinks, yellows, reds – anything but blue. In the first one, I counted 17 occurrences of the phrase ‘long-term’, but hardly a mention of the C-word.

In a sense, though, we shouldn’t be too surprised.

Any visit to a newsagent will face us with racks of election literature disguised as ‘newspapers’, with titles like ‘Daily Mail’, ‘Daily Express’, ‘Daily Telegraph’…

Yours sincerely

Charles Baily
