Bedford Disability Awareness Week

Dear editor,

I would very much like to introduce your readers to a fantastic event, which is being planned for next September. This event, BDAW or Bedford Disability Awareness Week will be launching its Facebook page today (Monday).

The actual dates for the event will be 20th till 26 September 2021.

The project is the brainchild of two local, disabled ladies, Laura Peggs and Jessica Grugeon.

We have both worked on Borough Council committees over the years and Laura is the chairperson of FLAG -Social activity group for adults with sensory, physical and/or learning difficulties.

The purpose of our Facebook page is to give the community, organisations and groups an opportunity to post their ideas and suggestions for what they would like to see at the final event.

At this early stage we are still in discussions with the Higgins Museum, where we would very much like to hold a week-long awareness project.

As yet, not much is finalised but we have time on our side.

With art being a personal passion of mine, I have been excited by the amount of disability art out there.

I have personally secured the help of a mouth painter, an oil painter, a potter and a poet who may potentially display their work, offer workshops and set competitions.

We also have plans to visit local schools and involve children.

We would also very much want to encourage participation from people of all disabilities, be they sensory physical mental or learning.

So please do contribute, look at our page, chat with your friends, share your ideas and think we could make something pretty special

Thank you
Jessica Grugeon

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.

Thank you for your support.
