Dear editor,

My name is Yvonne Gambe, I am from Zimbabwe and have been living in the UK for the past 19 years.

I recently launched a campaign to raise funds to buy re-usable pads for girls in rural areas in Zimbabwe. These girls miss school every month because they can’t afford to buy sanitary wear.

Some of the young girls resort to using cow dung during their periods due to menstrual poverty in Zimbabwe.

We have raised £1,700 on Go Fund Me so far, our target is £10,000.

The situation is really bad. Some of these girls end up being forced into child marriages because the families can’t afford to look after these young girls.

If we reach our target we want to buy sewing machines for these girls to make their own reusable pads and hopefully, they can mass produce and sell these too.

We also know there is a concern with hygiene when it comes to menstruation, so we would like to raise funds for clean water as well.

I hope that we can raise enough funds to help these young girls have the bright future they deserve. You can help by donating at https://gofund.me/7cfb3305.

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
