Letters: New station in Bedford is not a new idea

Bedford station
The upgrade of Bedford Midland Station has put homes in the Poets Area at risk

Dear editor

With reference to Stuart Bolton’s letter (letters 30th April) in which he states, “It has recently come to light that Bedford Borough Council has offered to pay for the Midland Road Station rebuild and construction of a multi-storey car park.”

Bedford Borough Council and Network Rail have been in negotiation/discussion over a new station for Bedford for at least ten years to my knowledge but have failed to come to an agreement to date, mainly over the number & location of parking spaces I believe.

The £6m he refers to is the council’s contribution to the costs, which will far exceed this figure, and not some new cash magically conjured up as a bribe to EWR.
