In light of recent events I have sent an email urging the mayor to close the town center. I have sent the following email:
Dear Mayor Hodgson,
I returned to Bedford yesterday (4:30pm) and while driving back home through the town centre I was APPALLED by the number of people still out.
Many residents are NOT taking any form of social distancing seriously. Many residents obviously do not believe or recognise the danger of such behaviour.
I URGE YOU TO PLEASE ASK TOWN CENTER SHOPS AND SHOPPERS TO CLOSE AND STAY AWAY.
If they will not change their behaviour then closing non-essential shops (all except food shops and pharmacies) will reduce the number of town centre visitors.
If nothing is done I can say with CERTAINTY we will see a sharp increase in the number of COVID-19 patients in Bedford in the coming days and weeks. The social and economic impact of this will be massive compared to the ‘benefit’ of keeping shops open.
Please, I urge you to do something about this and stop our hospital becoming overwhelmed.
You may brush this aside but we need to be PROACTIVE NOT REACTIVE.
