Dear editors,

It is with great sadness that we saw the closure this week of Gunns Bakery, the outlet is no longer profitable under current trading conditions, yet another independent shop gone from Bedford.

The last major one we lost was Colemans which I used regularly. The staff could not have been more helpful. For Colemans too, trading in Bedford was no longer profitable.

Before long Wilko will be empty. It has been such a useful reasonable quality centrally located shop, ‘the home of family value’, in Bedford.

There is nothing like Wilko left in the town centre.

I hope that the premises, occupying four historic buildings, are taken over by a company that sells quality products and that will display attractive exterior signage in keeping with the High Street on which so much money has been spent improving historic frontages.
