Dear editor,
I live in a small village 10 minutes’ drive from the town centre and try to make time to visit as much as possible to support the local businesses.
I’m not a Bedford native, but having lived here for over eight years now, I feel like it’s my home and have genuine affection for the town.
I know there are plenty of initiatives trying to revamp our town centre, but one thing that strikes me every time I visit and something that no one is visibly doing anything about, is just how downright grimy everything is.
Now I’m talking of years of neglect of the facades and very brick and stonework of the buildings, many of which are stunningly beautiful, that make up our town centre.
We have people out there scrubbing chewing gum off the floor, but it seems no one loves our historic architectural masterpieces.
I come from further north originally, so I’m no stranger to the appearance of an industrialised town and how deposits from heavy industry can build up, but to my knowledge, this isn’t the case here with Bedford being predominantly a historic trading town.
A coat of paint, a scrub and maybe a pressure wash would do wonders to brighten our town centre and give a lasting impression to residents and visitors that Bedford is not a town in decline.
