Bedford - finally on the Anglia TV weather map

Last year, Mayor Dave Hodgson mounted a campaign to call for Bedford to be included on the BBC Look East and ITV Anglia weather maps, and the Bedford Independent is 100% behind it.

Despite being the county town of Bedfordshire, Bedford has been conspicuous by its absence on the meteorological charts.

“It has bothered me for a number of years, and I know it bothers many local residents too,” said Dave.

“Toward the end of last year, I contacted both BBC Look East and ITV Anglia asking them to look at putting Bedford on their maps.

“ITV Anglia have now done so, as you can see in the photograph, in their ‘West’ region that covers Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes.

“However, BBC Look East have yet to do so. I want to show them how important this is to us, so I have set up a petition for residents to sign.”

Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire, punching well above its weight both culturally, historically and on the sporting stage.

It has a proud, famous history dating back to the early Middle Ages. Throughout this history it has been a cultural and commercial centre for the wider area, and it continues to play this role today.

“Bedford has a larger population than some other towns that are already on the weather maps,” said the Mayor.

“Bedford deserves to be there!”

Local Bedford-based cartographer, Alice Gadney, said, “When people look at maps, their initial thought is – where do I live? or where am I?

“So seeing Bedford on the weather map, they will gain a sense of place.

“Bedford has an important place in the region. It has a long brewing tradition and nearby Stewartby brickworks bought in people from all over the world.

“There’s an amazing cultural mix here with great education, incredible teachers and great family activities and festivals.

“Bedford has amazing open spaces and nature with plenty of sports and activities for all the family to do. Put it on the map!”

Please do sign my petition here and we can hopefully persuade the BBC to include Bedford on their weather map.
