Justgiving page aims to raise £10,000 to support Redwood Grove residents

A JustGiving page has been set up to support the former residents of the flats in Redwood Grove following yesterday’s (Monday) devastating explosion.

Fire tore through the two-storey building yesterday morning, leaving entire families homeless and without any possessions.

The official crowdfunder has been set up by Shirley Claxton, community centre manager at Scott Hall, Mel Stratton at Love in a Bag Bedford and local philanthropist, Ben Sturge.

“We have all joined forces to provide an official hub for donations so that people know their money is going to make a difference,” said Mel.

Ben Sturge captured some drone footage of the aftermath of the fire and has created a video to raise awareness of the JustGiving page.

Shirley told the Bedford Independent that around 29 to 30 families have been affected and that since opening up the community centre for donations, they’ve been inundated.

“There has been an amazing response from the community,” said Shirley.

“We’ve had around 50 people turn up to volunteer to help sort out the donations and have already taken six car loads to the Bunyan Centre to be distributed to the affected families.”

Alongside contributions from the public, staff from Waitrose and Tesco visited Scott Hall this morning to drop off donations.

The Bedford Kindness Facebook Group, Impact, Home Instead and the University of Bedfordshire have also offered support.

Shirley said that the team were still accepting donations, particularly toiletries including towels, flannels, nappies, baby wipes, razors and sanitary products.

“The families are in hotels at the moment and have absolutely nothing,” said Shirley.

“Today we’ve been packing donations up to take to where residents are being housed. The support for people is going to be ongoing.”

If you would like to donate toiletries or other items, they can be taken to the back gates of the Scott Hall Community Centre between 10am and 6pm. If you have any questions you can contact the community centre directly on 07742016465.
