Plans have been submitted for a major expansion of one of Bedford’s “vital” community hubs.
Sri Gurdwara Sahib Ji has applied for planning permission for a substantial two-storey rear extension at its premises on Ampthill Street to meet the needs of a “growing congregation”.
According to documents submitted to Bedford Borough Council, the existing building is no longer considered fit for purpose, with both the prayer hall and community dining facilities described as undersized for current levels of use.
The proposed development would create a new, larger prayer hall on the first floor, with the current prayer space converted into classrooms for community education.
On the ground floor, plans include a large new Langar (community dining) hall, supported by a modern kitchen and preparation area.
The scheme also includes installing a lift, providing step-free access to the first floor for the first time, alongside a new accessible toilet.
Applicants say the changes are intended to make the building more inclusive for elderly worshippers and people with mobility impairments.
Externally, the plans show a car park with 29 marked spaces, including three disabled bays, and a new external fire escape to meet safety requirements following the expansion.
Planning documents state that the extension has been designed to the rear of the building to minimise its impact on the Ampthill Street frontage, and that a solar study has been carried out to assess potential effects on nearby homes.
The application argues that the proposal complies with Bedford Borough’s local plan policies on community facilities, accessibility and design, and represents a long-term investment in a “vital and long-established community hub” for the town.
