Bedford’s independent scene has a new reason to celebrate as The Flute makes its long-awaited return to the town’s nightlife scene.
Re-opened and reimagined by husband-and-wife team Lui and Jennifer Magliaro, the new look Flute combines the spirit of the much-loved original with a fresh concept that brings something stylish and distinctive to the town centre.
Many will remember their new location’s past lives as a hair salon, ale house and cocktail bar, but this latest chapter feels like a confident evolution. With The Flute’s chic décor, welcoming staff and family-run ethos, it is already making its mark.
Looking out over one of Bedford’s most vibrant independent streets, the bar benefits from being surrounded by some of the town’s best independent shops, cafes and restaurants that all prove that indy businesses really are the backbone of a thriving town centre.
Inside, The Flute’s décor is both classy and comfortable, with tasteful soft furnishings, ample seating and a dedicated area for live performers. Outside, a newly designed ‘garden’ offers a relaxed, covered, and heated space for all weather conditions.
The details are thoughtful and designed to impress. A champagne fridge, a professional team in smart uniforms who greet guests with smiles, and even a humidor for cigar lovers.
“It’s class, class, class,” said Lui. “Great hospitality, a very comfortable environment for anyone. We just wanted to bring back something really special for Bedford.”
Classy vibe
Jennifer, now a co-owner, said she was proud to see The Flute reborn.
“I did work at the old Flute, and I do love the hospitality business,” she explained. “So yes, Lui twisted my arm and actually, I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved.”
Guests can expect live singers, cocktails, wine and spirits, with the atmosphere moving effortlessly from laid-back to lively. “It’s somewhere you can relax, but also somewhere uplifting where you can have a bit of a boogie if you want to as well,” added Lui.
The dress code is also accessible, featuring a smart-casual style designed to maintain a relaxed yet refined atmosphere.
“No tracksuits, no caps, really,” said Jennifer. “People don’t have to come dressed to the nines, but we want to keep a classy vibe.”
Food may be introduced in the near future, with bar snacks and sharing boards under discussion once the venue has settled into its new rhythm.
Reflecting on the relaunch, Lui said: “It’s a very relaxed, friendly, family-oriented environment, just something really special.”
Jennifer added with a smile, “And a champagne fridge to die for.”
The Flute is open:
- Wednesday and Thursday: 5pm to 11pm
- Friday: 5pm to midnight
- Saturday: 5pm to 1am
- Sunday: 12pm to 8pm, with a regular “Soul Factory” event
The Flute is at 38 St Peter’s Street, Bedford. Over 21s only, with a smart-casual dress code.
