This month’s Great Bedfordian is someone who has spent many years working with people in some of Bedford’s most vulnerable communities.

Recently appointed as CEO of Beyond Detention, Sam Price heads up a team supporting people detained at Yarl’s Wood, and also continues that support once they have been released.

She might not originally be from Bedford, but says that now she’s lived here she couldn’t see herself living anywhere else…

Name: Sam Price

Occupation: CEO, Beyond Detention – we’re a charity that supports people who are detained in Yarl’s Wood, by providing them with phone credit, essential clothing and someone to talk to.

We also support people once they’ve been released from Yarl’s Wood, with online courses and friendship.

Born here or blow in? Blown in – I’m originally from Manchester, but have lived here for 16 years now and love it.  Can’t see myself moving anywhere else if I’m honest.

Best breakfast in Bedford? I’m a big fan of the “Lounge Eggs” at Albero Lounge in Riverside Square – you can always get a table, and the staff are super friendly too.

Best boozer? For me, it’s a tie between the Devonshire Arms (the Devy) or the White Horse on Newnham Avenue…walking distance from home, and just lovely people!

Best coffee or cuppa? My new go-to is the Old Curiosity Café on Bromham Road.  They make a lovely oat milk latte, and the cakes are to die for!

They’ve done a really good job of the décor as well. I’ve been taking all my staff in there for their one-to-ones recently.

Best gig you’ve seen in Bedford? I go to a lot of live comedy…I love the Castle Comedy nights at the Quarry Theatre, but if you want to know the best music gig, I’d have to go with Tom Jones in Bedford Park a few years ago…he was AMAZING!

Ever read John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress? I know I should have, but I haven’t I’m afraid!

Ever eaten a Bedfordshire Clanger? No, but I have tried chocolate toothpaste; does that count?!

An off-the-beaten-track gem that everyone should know about?  I’m a big fan of walking, and love to do the Willington Loop on a Sunday morning. I head out from Priory to the Danish Camp and back and there are some beautiful, peaceful spots on the route where you can just enjoy nature, and Bedford’s greatest asset – the river.

Best Bedfordian? Historically, I’d go with Amy Walmsley as I’m a staunch feminist.

Currently, I’d say one of my local heroes is Sharon de Leonardis – CEO, actor, radio DJ, innovator, and instigator!  This woman gets things done!

Three words that best sum up Bedford? Full of potential!
