Once again, organisations, individuals and communities are joining together to take part in The Great Big Green Week – the UK’s biggest call for action on climate change.

This year’s event takes place on 10 – 18 June 2023 and there will be a wide range of events to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change while also making a connection with these issues in our community.

Throughout the week, people from all walks of life will be showcasing actions to tackle climate change, creating a better world, for us now and for the next generation.

In Bedford, there will have Yoga and Wellbeing in the Park, Letters to Tomorrow, walks, a plant sale, talks, litter picks and more. You can find details of everything that is planned in Bedford Borough at the Great Big Green Week website here.

In 2019, Bedford Borough Council declared a Climate Emergency with the aim to become Carbon Neutral by 2030.

Green councillor, Lucy Bywater said: “Great Big Green Week is a good opportunity for people to engage with some of the big environmental challenges in a variety of positive ways in their own lives, starting new long-term habits which benefit them, their wellbeing and the local environment.

“These might help people connect with local wildlife in really positive ways, but Great Big Green Week also offers ways to help put pressure on policy makers to make the big changes we need.

“These could include, for example, improving physical and mental health by enabling more safe walking and cycling, helping people save money by reducing waste or learning repair skills and cutting energy use or strengthening the local economy by supporting sustainable local businesses over multinationals.

“There are a lot of win-wins if we push for change together.”

Councillor Jim Weir, portfolio holder for environment, said, “We have some really exciting events and activities planned in Bedford Borough that we hope will raise awareness of how we can all do more to lower our impact on the environment.

“As a council, we continue to be ambitious about tackling climate change.”

The Great Big Green Week is being organised by the Climate Coalition, the UK’s largest group of people dedicated to action against climate change. Members include the National Trust, WWF, Women’s Institute, Oxfam, and RSPB.
