Scuba divers, kayakers, boaters and members of the public are all taking part in next month’s Rivercare Clean Up – and you can join in too.

The annual River Great Ouse litter pick takes place on Saturday, 7 October between 10am and midday. Anyone wanting to volunteer can just turn up at the car park at the back of Borough Hall on Caldwell Street, alongside the river.

Volunteers taking part will be given equipment to pick up litter along the riverside and will be supported by scuba divers in the river and kayakers will assist in clearing the banks.

The iconic John Bunyan Boat will also be on hand to provide refreshments and add to the morning’s community camaraderie.

Jim Weir, portfolio holder for environment, highways and transport, encouraged local residents to get involved.

“Our riverside is a valuable asset to our community and it’s our collective responsibility to ensure it remains clean and vibrant,” he said.

“We are inviting all residents to come together for this event, show their community pride, and make a positive impact on our local environment.”

You don’t need any special equipment to take part and Bedford Borough Council will provide all necessary tools and materials. Volunteers are advised to wear suitable clothing and sturdy boots and all children must be accompanied by a parent or carer at all times.

The meeting point for the litter pick is at the back of Borough Hall, located at Cauldwell Street, Bedford, MK42 9AP, right by the river.
