Cadent, the company currently upgrading gas pipes along Midland Road say they’re adding a further closure to the area to make sure the work is completed on time.

The works started in May and have seen partial closures road users diverted through each phase of the works.

  • Phase one: Midland Road will be closed from the junction of Costin Street to the junction with Battison Street from Monday 15 May until Friday 23 June
  • Phase two: Midland Road will be closed from the junction of Battison Street to Prebend Street between Monday 26 June and Friday 21 July
  • Phase three: work will then take place on Midland Road from the junction of Rutland Road and Grafton Road between Monday 24 July and Friday 1 September.

Now, Cadent say they’ll also be closing Midland Road from Ashburnham Road to Grafton Street/Gibbons Road fully from 6 to 13 August and diverting traffic along Ashburnham Road and Greyfriars back to Midland Road.

Cadent Lead Delivery Engineer, Pete Day, said: “We have been working with local stakeholders to ensure the necessary work is carried out safely. Whilst a complete road closure may not [be] ideal, it will ensure that we can safely and quickly lay the pipe across this junction.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we complete this important work.”

Cadent say this “essential work” is part of a larger project to remove the current metallic gas pipe along Midland Road and replace it with tough new pipes which will last for decades, futureproofing the Bedford network.

Work will continue along Midland Road after the road closure, on the final stretch, from the junction of Rutland Road and Grafton Road until Friday 1 September.
