The former East of England, MEP, Richard Hewitt has confirmed that he has contracted coronavirus.

Mr Hewitt took to Twitter to confirm that he is being treated in his local hospital in Cambridge.

He said, “To all friends & colleagues, I’m afraid I’m one of many who has contracted Covid-19 and am currently being treated at my wonderful local hospital @CUH_NHS in #Cambridge. I’m sorry I’ll be out of action for a while but hope to bounce back before too long. Please keep safe and well.”

Until his resignation, Mr Hewitt was Member of the European Parliament for the Labour Party for 22 years between 1994 and 2016.

Since September 2016, Mr Howitt has held the post of chief executive of the International Integrated Reporting Council.
