This week, the doors opened at Food@FACES, the ‘pay as you feel’ café at the Community Centre in Church Lane in Bedford.

Run by family support charity FACES in partnership with new Community Interest Company (CIC) Food etc, the café will serve a selection of sandwiches, soups and daily specials.

Food@FACES will use in date, surplus food that would otherwise be wasted from local shops and food redistribution charity FareShare and will mainly be staffed by FACES’ volunteers.

Customers are invited to pay what they can afford for their food and drinks, whether that is a generous donation, nothing at all or something in between.

Any profits made will go to FACES projects which offer practical and emotional support to families under stress across Bedford.

FACES chief executive Wendie Harvey says, “We have been wanting to open a community café for some time but have lacked the resource to be able to do it.

“By working in partnership with Food etc we’re finally getting it off the ground. Cutting food waste and providing opportunities for people, regardless of their financial position, to enjoy tasty food together complements FACES other services perfectly.”

Food@FACES will be open from 11am to 2pm on Thursdays and Fridays. Opening hours and days may be extended in the future.
