Anita McCallum of SMART CJS was presented with the cheque by Father Paul Messam

The congregation of Elstow Abbey has presented the the SMART Prebend Centre with a cheque for £2000 to contribute to their CRIB fundraiser.

SMART CJS CEO, Anita McCallum, was bowled over to receive the surprise cheque from Father Paul Messam at the Parish Communion held on Sunday 2 February.

The money was raised through the Advent and Christmas Carol Service collections and from a number of members of the church who took part in the Big Sleep out.

Elstow Abbey has had a long connection with the Centre, acting as a collection point for clothes and food throughout the year.

However as The Reverend Fr. Paul Messam said, “There are also times when cash also can make such a difference to a vital organisation such as the Smart Prebend Centre.”

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
