Kempston Park Indoor Bowls Club is inviting the local community to discover just how much more there is to bowls than they might think at a completely free open day on Sunday, 13 September.

Kempston Park Indoor Bowls Club (KPIBC) on Hillgrounds Road wants to challenge the perception that bowls is merely for the older generation by opening up the club to anyone who wants to give the sport a try.

Whether you’ve never picked up a bowl, haven’t played for years, are looking for a new hobby or are simply curious about what goes on inside the club, everyone is welcome to come along and have a look around.

Friends and families are welcome to come together, and visitors are free to drop in at any point between 10am and 4pm.

Kempston Park Indoor Bowls Club is situated at 290 Hillgrounds Road, next door to Kempston Pool and Fitness.

No experience necessary

And if your first thought is “Bowls? That’s not for me”, the club would particularly like to meet you.

“We’d love people who have never considered bowls before to come through our doors and give it a try”, said a KPIBC spokesperson.

“There can still be a perception that bowls is only for a particular age group, but it’s a game of tremendous skill, tactics and strategy, and it’s also incredibly sociable and great fun.”

During the open day, visitors will be able to try indoor bowls completely free of charge, with equipment provided and coaches and members on hand to help absolute beginners get started.

No previous experience is necessary and there is no obligation to join the club after.

Two different types of memberships are available; bowls memberships and purely social memberships.

“You don’t need to know the rules, you don’t need any equipment, and you certainly don’t need to worry about being good at it. Just come along and have a go”, added the spokesperson.

“Our members and coaches will do the rest.

“KPIBC is also much more than somewhere to bowl. It’s a community and social club, and we’re really looking forward to welcoming people who perhaps drive past us regularly but have never actually ventured inside.”

The club hopes the open day will encourage people from Kempston, Bedford and surrounding areas to discover a local facility they may not previously have considered.
