When SMART CJS launched its Cold Relief In Bedford (CRIB) appeal in November, in aid of the SMART Prebend Centre for the homeless, Bedford – the target of £60,000 seemed ambitious.

But the charity has been thrilled at how much the community has got behind their fundraising challenge, and this this week they have reached the £40K milestone.

Anita McCallum, CEO of SMART CJS said,  “It’s been humbling to see all ages, all types of groups and organisations rally round to make this year’s CRIB Appeal a success.

“From churches to convents, schools to small businesses and rotary clubs to SMART CJS’s own staff and Trustees – we thank everyone for their generosity and kindness.

“Local groups have been running creative events like the Castle Comedy Nights and bedecked their homes in lights like the Twitchens in Cardington to raise significant amounts. Thank you to everyone – you are amazing!

“We only have £20K to go to make the £60K target – so let’s have one last push during the remainder of January and February to get the funds in that we so desperately need to keep the centre open in 2020.”

This initiative is running with the help of the Polish British Integration Centre, PBIC Bedford.

You can support the SMART Prebend Centre to stay open during these bitterly cold months by making a donation to CRIB. Just £10 could provide breakfast for 30 people. Please donate here www.smartcjs.org.uk/crib

Now more than ever, we need your help to fund the Bedford Independent’s quality journalism that serves our community...

We choose to champion editorial independence, meaning we report the facts without bias and can stand up to those in power when we believe it’s needed.

We can give a voice to people in our community whose voices may otherwise not be heard. And we don’t have a paywall, so everyone can read the stories we publish for free.

But in this time of crisis, many news organisations all over the world are facing existential threat, with advertising revenues plummeting. We’re no different.

We work hard every day to bring you news, commentary, entertainment and announcements from across Bedford. We hope that, with your help, we’ll be able to continue this for many years to come.
